One of my favorite baked goodies is a sweet, sticky, caramel-y, delicious butter tart. This recipe has the background taste of a legendarily good Canadian butter tart, with the added crunch of toasty walnuts and luscious chocolate. Another perfect recipe for the Holiday freezer or at any time of the year.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Bottom Layer

Using your hands, rub together until well blended and crumbly:

1 cup flour
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup salted butter

Press evenly into the bottom of an 8 or 9 inch square pan that has been lightly greased and lined with parchment paper. Bake for 15 minutes before pouring on the topping.

Topping

Mix together:

1 1/2 cups brown sugar
2 eggs
3/4 cup coarsely chopped walnuts\
2 tsp vanilla extract
pinch salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 cup chocolate chips

Mix together well and pour over baked base. Reduce oven to 325 degrees F and return to the oven for 20-25 minutes. Allow to cool completely before cutting. These will cut best after they have been  refrigerated.
