    His + Hers Cocktails

    Mr. E is not a fan of the cocktail.  Unless the cocktail looks like this:

    Maker's Mark, ice and a glass.

    Maker's Mark is his favorite, so we always have it in the house.  Untouched by me.  If I were to drink whisky on the rocks, I believe you'd find me hours later, lying on the bathroom floor to feel the cool, cool tiles on my face. <*insert college flashback here*>

    So, when we were at PF Chang's recently inhaling massive amounts of potstickers nibbling upon appetizers, I was happy to see a cocktail on their menu that maybe I could recreate at home...and share in a little of Mr. E's Maker's Mark.  It's romantic to share. ♥

    I call it....a Honey of a Whisky Sour.

    It's made with honey simple syrup, which sounds really fancy, but it just honey heated up with water.

    You'll also need this stuff:

    Maraschino cherries are a MUST in my cocktail book.  And, you'll want need some OJ and a lemon.

    Honey of a Whisky Sour
    {inspired by PF Chang's Twisted Whisky Sour, makes 1}

    for the honey simple syrup:
    1/2 cup honey
    1/2 cup water

    for the cocktail:
    1/8 cup Maker's Mark Whisky
    1 TBSP Cointreau
    3 TBSP honey simple syrup
    3 TBSP orange juice
    1 TBSP freshly squeezed lemon juice
    2 dashes bitters
    maraschino cherries

    For the simple syrup, combine the honey and water in a small saucepan.  Bring to just a simmer, then remove from heat and let cool.  Store in the fridge.

    For the cocktail, whisk all of the ingredients, except the cherries, in a bowl (or use a cocktail shaker filled with ice).  Pour over ice.  Add cherries, they're mandatory.


    Perfect for New Year's Eve, Birthday Eve, or Saturday Eve!

    My Top 15 Recipes and Top 4 Books of 2012

        Can you believe it's almost 2013?  I can't!  As I was looking over my posts for the year I wanted to make a list of my top 10 favorite recipes and top 3 books for the year.  However, when I realized I have posted 392 posts this year I knew that only having 10 favorite recipes would be next to impossible!  I can't believe I've posted more then one post a day all year.  Craziness!


         After taking a good look I was able to narrow it down to my top 15 recipes of the year and my top 4 books.  Unfortunately I've only reviewed 2 of my 4 favorite books but I blogged all 15 of my favorite recipes.  I hope you enjoy my recap of 2012 as much as I did!

    15.  Ravioli with Apples, Bacon, and Spinach.  This is the perfect fall pasta dish.  The salty bacon combined with the sweet and tart apples made for an amazing combination of fall flavors. 

    14.  Mini Fruit Tarts with Nutella Pastry Cream.  This was my first experience with Nutella and it was great!  The chocolate hazelnut pastry cream paired wonderfully with the strawberries and cherries.  The fact that they are pretty didn't hurt either!

    13.  Chipotle Beef Chili.   This recipe mixes the perfect amounts of beef, tomatoes, beans, and spice.  I also won the Giant Eagle Market District Chili Cook-off with this recipe!


    12.  Caramel Apple Cheesecake.  Fluffy cheesecake filled with spiced apples and topped off with homemade caramel.  What's not to like?

    11.  Brined, Basted, and Roasted Turkey BreastUntil this year I had never made a turkey.  I've now made this recipe three times.  The turkey stays moist from the brine and has a delicious flavor from the butter, wine, and herb baste.

    10.  Individual Angel Food Cakes with Lemon Curd and Fresh FruitI made these for my birthday this year.  The cake was light and fluffy paired with fresh lemon curd and then topped with different fresh fruits.  Each cake had it's own flavor.

    9.  Award Winning Black Bean BurgerThis black bean burger will make any meat lover change their mind amount veggie burgers.  Topped with avocado cream, roasted red peppers, mozzarella cheese, and arugula these are amazing!  The judges at the Market District thought so as well since they named my burger the winner in their contest!

    8.  Cherry Amaretto Jam.  I once again had a fabulous summer filled with canning.  My favorite jam of the summer was this one filled with sweet cherries and Amaretto.

    7.  HomemadePierogiesFor years my dad has been making the best pierogies I've ever tasted.  They are filled with cheese and potatoes.  This summer my parents came down to visit and my dad and I spent the day making these delicious pierogies.

    6.  Vanilla Bean Cupcakes with Fresh Blackberry Frosting.   These cupcakes are rich and flavorful with a gorgeous blackberry frosting that is both sweet and tart.  I made these for the Global Day of Epilepsy Awareness for my cousin who has epilepsy and they quickly became my new favorite cupcake.

    5.  Jack Daniel's Glaze.  I had this recipe pinned for months before I finally tried it.  The time I put into it was well worth the time.  The glaze is sweet and tangy and goes perfectly with chicken, beef, or shrimp.

    4.  Turtle Cookie Cups.  I'm particularly proud of this recipe because it's one of my only original cookie recipes.  Sugar cookie cups filled with chocolate chips, pecans, and caramel, then topped off with a pecan and chocolate drizzle.

    3.  Lamb Pita Sandwiches with Tzatziki Sauce. I love lamb but until this year I had never cooked it.  The lamb patties were moist and flavorful and paired nicely with the feta cheese.  The tzatziki was cool and worked well with the sandwiches.
    2.  Chocolate Covered Strawberry Cupcakes.  These cupcakes are show stoppers.  Moist chocolate cupcakes filled with fresh strawberry filling then topped with strawberry buttercream.  On top is a single chocolate covered strawberry.

    1.  Perfect Party Cake Filled with Lemon Curd, Orange Rhubarb Jam, and topped with Vanilla Bean Frosting.  My favorite recipe of the year was my brother's birthday cake.  This vanilla cake was the perfect blank slate for my homemade lemon curd and orange rhubarb jam fillings and then it was topped off with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream.  Everyone at the party loved this cake and it was deemed an instant favorite.

         My favorite books of the year were easy to choose.  One is the second book of a trilogy, one reminded me of my childhood in the 80's, one placed me in the middle of a magical and beautiful circus, and the other took me back in time.

    4.  Ready Player One.  This young adult novel is set in the future but goes back into the 80's and the beginning of video games for a virtual reality spins on some of my favorites.

    3.  Insurgent.  The second book in the Divergent series found Tris and Four running for their lives in a world without Factions.

    2.  11/22/63.  Never a history buff I wasn't sure how I would feel about Stephen King's book of time traveling back to the Kennedy assassination.  Not only did I learn a lot about that period in history it was an amazing book that left me thinking what if?

    1.  The Night Circus.  My favorite book of the year.  The author's words create such a complete picture of this magical circus that I felt as though I were in the world with them.  This is a story of love, loss, and magic that kept me wanting more until the very last page.

    Food Resolution

    The end of the year is a good time to reflect on the year past and gear up for next year.

    2012 was my year to master fish. I wouldn't say I am quite a master but I do have coral trout, scallops, bugs, salmon, snapper and whiting under my belt. I am no longer fearful of the fishys.

    This year I received my amazing Kenwood mixer. We experimented with sausages and now have a few sizzlers up our sleeves for summer BBQs. I tried some great desserts in the Sweet Adventures Blog Hop, attended my first pop up restaurant hosted by Kylie, Audra and Mindy of Masterchef fame, learnt and feasted during an amazing trip to Adelaide for Eat Drink Blog 2012 and discovered some new favourite recipes from my wonderful collection of magazines and books on our new food bookshelf! We are now set up for great success in 2013.

    Armed with the Kenwood and some great new cool books from Jamie Oliver, Andy Allen and Gordon Ramsay we are heading well equipped into 2013. What will 2013 bring? MasterChef Pros is just around the corner to keep me occupied! Health kick, at least in Jan, more fresh produce to cook with and in winter I am going to augment my soup repertoire with M(i)sch(i)ef soup kitchen with an attempt to post some recipes! So, with that, let's crack open the champers, clink your glasses! Happy New Year and here's to 2013!

    The Unblogged Files: December

    Happy New Year! Here is my December's Unblogged Files: the non-Christmas edition!

    I attended a blogger dinner at Captain Melville (full blogpost to come once I've visited again on my own coin and tried out more of the menu!). Highlights of the dinner were the punchy Macedon Gang Punch cocktail, with Cruzan rum, lemon juice, agave, egg white, port and Booker's fire bitters...

    One night when I really wanted a roast dinner but was too tired to cook, (yes, it happens to me sometimes) we tried the Roast Kitchen in Kew, who do a range of trad roast dinners in a retro diner-type setting. It was pretty pricey for a dinner, at $19.50 a plate, but the food was great, and they really pile up your plate! We were particularly impressed by their red wine gravy - great stuff!

    I've been loving the recipes in Jerusalem - I've found, despite the "coffee table book" appearance of the book, that the recipes are beautifully workable, even when adapting them to suit what I've got lying in the pantry. Examples: I adapted their lamb meatballs with broadbeans and lemon to use up some minced pork and peas that I had, and it worked wonderfully. Ditto the chermoula eggplant with bulghur and yogurt, for which I substituted couscous. Total love! I'm going to Europe next year and I cannot wait to visit their restaurants and cafes!

    Speaking of fabulous cafes, we brought yet another friend to Beatrix Bakes in North Melbourne: we're slowly converting all our friends to the way of Beatrix!

    Mega love for their Fry-Day ciabatta, with crumbed flathead and fennel quickle, and The vegetarian Rocky, with tomato, buffalo mozzarella and chopped basil pesto. Gorgeous!

    Less impressive was my one and only visit to the Workers' Food Room, on Little Lonsdale Street in the city, for a weekday lunch.

    Whilst the food I ordered was pretty good, I was sneakily upsold a side salad with my Lebanese chicken pastry (the waitress made it sound like they'd forgotten my salad and asked me if I wanted them to bring it out... only to have them charge me $8.50 for that tiny bowl of broccoli salad). Gah! It doubled the cost of my lunch! So irritating! Later on Twitter they apologised - apparently I was overcharged for the side salad too, they're only meant to be $6.50. Double gah! But yeah, there are hundreds of great lunch options in the CBD, not going back there! I definitely do not recommend this place!

    On a happier note, I was invited along to the opening day of the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie, which was a big day of sugar-filled fun! Full blogpost to come, but for now I want to show you my favourite item at their cafe, which funnily enough, doesn't contain any chocolate at all! I really loved their soft fluffy waffles, with fresh berries and creamy house-made ice-cream.

    Excess sugar can only be combated by excess salt (or you know, healthy eating and exercise, but y'all know I wasn't in the mood for that!!). So dinner after my visit to the chocolaterie was a Zinger Double Down at KFC. Yeah, I totally hated myself for 5 minutes, but I regret nothing!!

    And whilst we're on the KFC theme... one very hot day when I went to see a film (it was Pitch Perfect, and it wasn't very good - Bring It On for the win!), I decided to try one of those creamy Krusher drinks from KFC. Previously I'd never really seen the point, but I tried the mint choc one, and it was actually really really good! Creamy, minty, and with loads of delicious chocolate biscuit crumbs. When I Instagrammed it, loads of people told me that they love the Gaytime flavour, so I'll try that next time!

    I've been working throughout the Christmas period this year, but one of the long days in my office was enlivened by a personal cookie delivery from my friend Alaina! She'd made these fab Italian Meatball Cookies with Vanilla Bean Cream Cheese Frosting - they're kinda like chocolate gingerbread, heady with cloves, and studded with walnuts and chocolate chunks. So good! (If you're not all spiced out from Christmas, Google these and give them a go!)

    And just to prove that I do occasionally choose healthy food, let me say that I do recommend the Tofu-Don at Tokio, and the Sushi at Sushi Monger (both next to each other in The Causeway, between Little Collins and Bourke street). Both are great, cheap options for a CBD lunch!

    On that really hot Sunday last week, we stopped into Coffeehead in Camberwell for brunch, cold drip coffees and sweet, sweet airconditioning. The fruit toast was great, as were the corn fruitters, topped with smoked salmon and a perfect runny poached egg.

    Just the other day I whipped up a huge batch of Nigella's Chocolate Peanut Granola, from Feast. One of my faves, and I've made this, the original almond version, and the Christmassy cranberry version many many times*! (Primarily over the 2005-2006 period, it seems!)

     I love eating this stuff, especially with yogurt and berries! (See below in the new Kikki K bowls that my dad got me for Christmas!)

    The last thing I wanted to share with you in this post is the froyo I had at Cacao Green this afternoon for a treat. (I think I'm getting obsessed with them, haha!) The Mango Fantasy contained mango frozen yogurt, fresh mango cubes, raspberry compote, lychees, coconut jelly and a little waffle bite. It was really good, like bubble tea in froyo-form!

    We were really surprised by how good the waffle bites were - they were served warm (we could smell them being toasted while we waited!), and were fluffily doughy within, and crispy on the outside. I hadn't thought that their waffles would be anything to write home about... but they were really good! Next time I'm just getting a whole waffle!

    And thanks to the yummy waffles from Cacao Green, I've decided to make waffles tomorrow morning for my first breakfast in the new year!
