An unholy ritual, a ticking clock. Four children discover there are things that go bump in the night ...
Centuries ago a group of Elves committed an unholy ritual. But the ritual was a spectacular failure. It transformed the Elves into the Noctivagi - the beings we know as vampires.
Striving to maintain a fragile peace, the ancient Elves and Dwarves negotiated an Accord, which they've renewed every year on the Summer Solstice. The ceremony depends on the magical Rune Stone, but it's missing. If it is not found—and quickly—the consequences could be dire, and not just for Elves and Dwarves.
Four children, Rob, Jack, Eleanor, and Flora, stumble into a world of magic and mayhem when they move into Black Ledge, the old estate on the Maine coast, and discover they aren’t the only ones who live there. (-synopsis from Goodreads)
This fun and magical book features the Driscoll children, Rob, Eleanor, Jack, and Flora, just a regular family who moves into a huge house on a hill. After finding a secret entrance in a cave the children become made "aware" of the magical population of elves, dwarfs, and even vampires! They are soon swept up in an attempt to find the missing Rune Stone and set things right with the Realm.
The children soon learn that they can now talk to their horses, cat, and even the birds. While they are enjoying knowing all about the Realm and its Beings, they soon see the darker side of magic. A dwarf is attacked and left for dead and all he remembers is someone attacking him and looking for the Rune Stone.
It all comes to a head when a vampire kidnaps Eleanor and holds her for a ransom of the Rune Stone. Will her siblings and Camedon, Keeper of the Rune Stone, find her in time? Will the balance of the Realm be upset? Or will good magic prevail?
I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.
